Honolulu, meaning “sheltered harbor” is the capital and the largest city of Hawaii. It is the main gateway to Hawaii and a primary portal into the United States.
The Hawaiian city is also considered the most remote city of its size in the world and the westernmost major US city. In 2015, Honolulu was ranked the second safest city in the United States and achieved a high rating on world livability rankings. As of 2010 census, Honolulu has a population of 390, 738, ranking as the most populated Oceanian city outside Australasia and the second most populated city in Polynesia. More than 50 percent of the city’s population is comprised of Asian with 54.8 percent. Whites and African Americans were at 17.9 percent and 1.5 percent respectively, while Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander were at 8.4 percent. Other races and ethnicities in Honolulu include American Indian, and people with two or more races. Tourism is booming in the city, attracting millions of visitors and sharing 10 billion US dollar annually to the state’s economy. The flood of tourists in the city is no longer surprising as it houses the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Zoo, Foster Botanical Garden, and the Waikiki Aquarium. The Bishop Museum, located in the Kalihi district in Honolulu, is considered the largest history museum in Hawaii. It was founded by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, his wife and the last descendant of the Kamehameha royal family. The museum contains an extensive collection of Polynesian artifacts and heirlooms of the royal family. The collection is considered the largest in the world, exceeding 24 million with more than half are part of the entomological collection. Honolulu Zoo, which spans 42 acres, was built as part of the 300-acre Queen Kapi’olani Park and the lone zoo in the country to be founded via a King’s grants made by King David Kalakaua in 1876. At present, Honolulu Zoo has about 1,230 animals in its care including barn owls, river terrapin, hamadryas baboon, golden lion tamarin, American Flamingo, African wild dog, Grant’s zebra, siamang, warthog, and aardvark, among others. The Foster Botanical Garden was built in 1853, making it the oldest botanical garden in Hawaii. It is found in 50 North Vineyard Boulevard in Honolulu. The land where the garden stands was leased by Queen Kalama to German physician and botanist William Hillebrand who planted trees and introduced several plants to Hawaii. Following Hillebrand’s return to Germany, the garden was sold to Thomas Foster and his wife Mary Foster who later bequeathed the land to the City and County of Honolulu. Then-director Paul Weissich expanded the garden which used to measure about 5.5 acres to 14 acres. The Foster Botanical Garden comprises the most extensive and most diverse collection of tropical plants in the country. Waikiki Aquarium, founded in 1904 by the Honolulu Rapid Transit Authority, is the second oldest public aquarium in the United States. The aquarium was built next to a living coral reef and is habituated by more than 3,500 organisms of marine plants and animals in 490 species. Annually, the Waikiki Aquarium attracts more than 330,000 people. Hawaii Family Dental in Honolulu
